An existing product may already have an enclosure designed around 18650 cells. The battery holder, BMS, welding fixture and internal wiring may all be based on that format.

Changing to 21700 is no longer just a cell replacement.

The whole pack may need to change.

So when someone asks, “Is 21700 better than 18650?”, my answer would usually be:

It depends on what you are trying to improve.

If the goal is more energy in a similar cylindrical-cell architecture, 21700 is interesting.

If the goal is keeping an existing compact product or reducing changes to production, 18650 may still be the more practical choice.

What Is the Difference Between 18650 and 21700? The numbers describe the approximate physical dimensions.

That sounds like a small difference.

It isn’t.

When you place dozens or hundreds of cells into a battery pack, those extra millimeters can change the entire mechanical layout.

A pack designed around 18650 cells cannot simply accept 21700 cells because the cells “look similar.”

The holder, spacing, enclosure and connections need to be checked.

Likewise, not every 18650 is a low-capacity cell.

18650 vs 21700 Capacity This is where 21700 becomes attractive for many battery manufacturers.

Suppose you compare:

18650: 3000mAh

with:

21700: 5000mAh

At a nominal voltage of around 3.6–3.7V, the approximate energy per cell would be:

21700

That’s a noticeable difference.

Fewer cells may be needed to achieve a particular total energy target.

For example, if the product needs roughly 1kWh of battery energy, the 21700 configuration could potentially use fewer cells than an equivalent 18650 design.

That can simplify some aspects of pack construction.

But there is a catch.

The larger cell also takes up more space individually.

So whether the final battery becomes smaller depends on the complete pack layout, not just the Wh per cell.

Does 21700 Have More Voltage Than 18650? Not necessarily.

This is an important point.

18650 and 21700 are physical formats, not voltage specifications.

Both can use lithium-ion chemistry with a nominal voltage around 3.6V or 3.7V, depending on the cell design.

So:

18650 ≠ a specific voltage

and

21700 ≠ a specific voltage

If you connect either type in series, the pack voltage increases according to the number of cells or series groups.

南无不动如来应正等觉，甚为希有！ 南无释迦牟尼如来应正等觉，善能说彼称赞法门！

引言

时说法人，当随病者心之所欲，而为宣说佛土因缘、十六观等，犹如西方无量寿国，一一具说，令病者心乐生佛土。为说法已，复教谛观，随何方国，佛身相好。观相好已，复教请佛及诸菩萨，而作是言：「稽首如来应正等觉，并诸菩萨摩诃萨，愿哀愍我，拔济饶益。我今奉请，为灭众罪；复将弟子，随佛菩萨生佛国土。」

笔者受这段窍诀的启发，不揣冒昧，在义净三藏原文的基础上略作扩写，作此《五颂祈请文》，并略作解释。以此善根，愿共一切众生随愿往生净土、乃至毕竟成就无上菩提。

又，《优婆塞戒经》以父母为东方，又以檀波罗蜜为东方，意指行人若能知父母恩恭敬供养，修习布施波罗蜜者，才算真正的“稽首东方”。

1. 无病。如世间病人，身心不安，故有掉动；彼佛及彼界补特伽罗远离此过，故名“不动”。

2. 无怒。阿閦菩萨最初发心，「于一切众生，不为瞋等之所摇动。」内自不为瞋等烦恼所动，所以阿閦佛也翻译为“无怒佛”。

3. 不退菩提。阿閦菩萨从初发心，乃至道场，决定安住大乘，心无动转。彼界菩萨，由佛力故，亦复如是，不为二乘狭意所动，如经：「若住不动如来清净佛刹者，彼诸众生终不退堕，不可引摄，亦不退还，住无上菩提，有大势力，不可摇动，永无退转。」

4. 不扰。《悲分陀利经》言： 「如说修行，不恼他心。」既内心不为烦恼狭意所动，自然体现到外相上不会恼害众生，不会扰动众生。

5. 无魔。阿閦菩萨初发心时，魔王随喜；乃至菩提道场，天魔不生障碍之想；既成佛已，彼世界中虽有魔天而不作魔事；乃至他方世界有诸众生，发信乐心称彼佛名，愿乐欲生者，佛皆护念，不令魔众能得其便。如是不为诸魔所动。又复，非但天魔，彼佛降伏烦恼魔、蕴魔、死魔，一切诸魔所不能动。

6. 不违/不乖。阿閦菩萨从初发心得法身威力，既解了第一义谛如真实性，亦复通达世谛假名流布；为众生故，依俗谛，示三业，然亦不违第一义。如经：「不动法界，游诸佛刹」「不动法界，能现种种幻化庄严，令诸众生次第当得趣涅槃岸」，身不动也。如经：「能善分别诸法相，于第一义而不动」，语不动也。如经：「菩萨成就四法，观众生界不动法界，何等四？观自实性；解于法性；观众生性不疑智性；观诸众生同涅槃性，是为四」，意不动也。

7. 镜智。阿閦佛代表一切诸佛的“大圆镜智” (Ādarśajñāna आदर्शज्ञान)。参考《佛地经论》：

   经曰：如大圆镜，有乐福人悬高胜处无所动摇，诸有去来无量众生，于此观察自身得失，为欲存得舍诸失故。如是如来悬圆镜智处净法界无间断故，无所动摇，欲令无量无数众生观于染净，为欲取净舍诸染故。
   
   论曰：高胜处者所谓高幢，或余胜处。净法界者，无垢真如。处谓安处，或依或缘无间断故。无动摇者，由此镜智依缘法界穷生死际，恒常随逐相续无断，故无动摇。此义意言，大圆镜智永离一切分别动摇，一得已后尽未来际相续无断。其余三智虽无妄计，而有无执作意分别，证得已后或行不行，非不动摇。

   
   

复次，“不瞋/无怒”的缘故，由浅而深，略说七层。瞋、恚、忿、恨等相关的法的具体定义，可参考《法蕴论·杂事品》。

1. 为自利故。瞋是一种不善法，会对自己的身心乃至器世间都造成负面的影响；离瞋则有与之相对的正面的影响。如《大毗婆沙论》：「谓若十不善业道具增长时，此赡部洲有四衰损出现于世，谓寿量衰损、有情衰损、资具衰损、善品衰损。……诸有瞋恚，若习、若修、若多修习，生那落迦、​​傍生、鬼趣，是异熟果；从彼处没，来生人中，瞋恚猛利，是等流果；彼增上故，所感外物多分枯悴、果实苦涩，是增上果。」

2. 推己及人。经言：「自爱仁恕，终不于他而生瞋恚。」何以故？经言：「善男子！谓诸菩萨非己所安不加于物。若诸菩萨守护此法，即是能持诸佛如来一切禁戒。……善男子！若有敬顺如​​来语者，于此一法常当忆念。何以故？无有众生爱乐于苦，凡有所作悉求安乐，乃至菩萨求阿耨多罗三藐三菩提亦为自他皆得乐故。」

3. 慈悲。观众生苦，欲令其得安乐，发大慈悲心；欲共众生同得无上正等菩提，究竟安乐，发大菩提心；自然与瞋相违。

4. 应理。无始轮回之中，一切有情无不是我的亲友，理应互为饶益，何忍反更瞋之；彼于我有恩，理应知恩报恩，何忍反更瞋之；我于彼所作不善业，理应惭愧、深自悔责，种种方便用偿斯债，何忍反更瞋之。（此之三心，详见《大乘理趣六波罗蜜经》。）

5. 瞋舍众生，违菩提道，因此菩萨尤其注重离瞋，以最高的优先级来处理瞋。如《决定毗尼经》：「若有菩萨如恒河沙欲相应心而犯于戒，或有菩萨因一瞋心而犯于戒，等住菩萨大乘之道，因瞋犯者当知最重。所以者何？因瞋恚故能舍众生，因贪欲故于诸众生而生亲爱。优波离！所有诸结能生亲爱，菩萨于此不应生畏；所有诸结能舍众生，菩萨于此应生大畏。」

6. 皆有佛性。观察一切众生皆有佛性，不应轻慢，况瞋彼耶！

7. 不可得。观察“我”及“有情”乃至一切诸法毕竟不可得故，谁于何处而起瞋耶；乃至“瞋”亦空，“无瞋”亦空，空亦复空，入不二法门。

以上归依、礼敬、随念佛宝。

暂入者，即不住义。如经：「必不信住诸声闻地。」

进趣佛菩提者，如经：「住声闻地补特伽罗证无学者，闻彼刹土功德庄严，亦希瞻礼供养奉事。」

证佛菩提者，经中分明，当证菩提：「若声闻乘人闻此功德法门受持读诵，为无上菩提及真如相应故精勤修习，彼于后身当得成就，或于二生补处、或复三生，终不超过，当成正觉。」又复经言菩萨声闻同一解脱，可知究竟一乘：「菩萨声闻非无优劣，而于解脱则无有异。」又复经言彼刹阿罗汉得四无畏，窃按四无畏乃佛不共法，菩萨尚不可得，何况通途声闻，是故声闻作佛之义明矣：「彼佛国中诸声闻众多获四无所畏。」

以上归依、礼敬、随念僧宝。

问：云何归依、礼敬、随念三宝，以为往生方便？

答：如《称赞经》言：「复次舍利弗！若菩萨摩诃萨愿生彼佛刹者，于东方无量世界诸佛如来说微妙法及声闻众，应以其像随念在前，愿我当证菩提说微妙法，及声闻众皆如彼佛。舍利弗！是诸菩萨应修三种随念善根，愿与一切众生平等共习，以此善根回向阿耨多罗三藐三菩提。舍利弗！如是菩萨回向善根无有限量。假使一切众生各持一器量等虚空，作如是言：『丈夫！彼之善根分与于我。』舍利弗！此诸善根若有色相，给与众生皆满其器各各持去，而彼善根亦无穷尽。以回向阿耨多罗三藐三菩提，无有限量不可移转故。舍利弗！彼三随念所成回向一切种智，以此善根三宝随转。舍利弗！若有菩萨成此善根，应知不堕一切恶趣，而能摧伏波旬及诸魔众，于彼彼佛刹随乐受生。乃至南西北方四维上下亦复如是，皆得随愿受生。是故菩萨摩诃萨于此随念善根应当积集，彼积集已应回向不动如来，故于彼刹当得受生。」

问：何故先说声闻、后说菩萨？

答：由小入大故；随顺经文的顺序故；声闻尚具无量功德，何况菩萨。

【愿哀悯我，拔济饶益】

《大乘理趣六波罗蜜多经》：「以是观察三界六道，无有堪能拔济我者，以是应当归依佛法僧。除佛法僧，更无有能救护我者。一切有情若欲求于阿耨多罗三藐三菩提涅槃乐者，应当归依佛法僧宝。」

《入胎经》：「于淫欲境极生爱着，大师哀愍，于生死海强拔令出，方便安置究竟涅槃。」

《大毗婆沙论》：「众人怖所逼，多归依诸山，园苑及丛林，孤树制多等。此归依非胜，此归依非尊，不因此归依，能解脱众苦。诸有归依佛，及归依法僧，于四圣谛中，恒以慧观察：知苦知苦集，知永超众苦，知八支圣道，趣安隐涅槃。此归依最胜，此归依最尊，必因此归依，能解脱众苦。」

Button top and flat top 18650 batteries use the same basic cylindrical format, but their positive terminals are different. That small difference can determine whether a cell fits a device, makes proper contact, or works correctly in a custom battery pack.

Small Difference Can Cause a Big Problem When ordering 18650 batteries for the first time, the specification list can look straightforward.

Capacity.

Voltage.

Discharge current.

Dimensions.

Then there is one small detail that is easy to overlook:

button top or flat top?

At first glance, it may seem like a minor physical difference. After all, both batteries are called 18650 cells and both are cylindrical lithium-ion batteries.

But if you put the wrong type into a battery holder, the device may not make proper electrical contact.

For a custom battery pack, the difference can affect the way cells are connected and welded.

I have seen this kind of specification get overlooked simply because the buyer focused on capacity and voltage first.

It is a good example of why an 18650 battery should be selected according to the actual application rather than just its basic cell name.

What Is Flat Top 18650 Battery? A flat top 18650 has a relatively flat positive terminal.

The positive contact does not extend very far above the top surface of the cell.

This design is widely used in battery-pack manufacturing because cells can be arranged closely together and connected using appropriate welding methods or battery-pack components.

Flat top cells are common in applications where the battery is not intended to be installed directly into a consumer battery holder.

For example:

What Is Button Top 18650 Battery? A button top 18650 has a small raised positive terminal.

It looks similar to the positive end of many traditional cylindrical batteries.

That raised terminal can make it easier for the cell to contact spring-loaded or mechanical battery holders designed for this type of terminal.

Button top cells are therefore commonly associated with devices where the user inserts individual batteries.

Examples can include certain:

Flashlights Portable devices Battery-powered tools Electronic equipment Consumer products But “button top” does not automatically mean that a cell will fit every device.

The height, diameter, terminal shape and overall construction still need to be checked.

Different 18650 manufacturers use slightly different constructions, so always confirm the actual dimensions.

Button top and flat top 18650 terminal comparison Why the Terminal Shape Matters Imagine a flashlight designed with a spring contact at one end and a fixed contact at the other.

The battery holder expects the positive terminal to reach a certain position.

A button top cell may work perfectly.

A flat top cell might sit too far away from the contact.

The battery itself could be completely healthy.

The voltage could be correct.

The capacity could be correct.

And yet the flashlight still does not turn on.

That is why compatibility is not just about electrical specifications.

Mechanical compatibility matters too.

The same situation can happen in reverse if a device has very limited space and the extra height of a button top cell causes the battery compartment to close improperly.

Is Button Top 18650 Longer? Often, yes.

The raised positive terminal can increase the overall length of the battery, although the actual difference depends on the cell design.

There may also be other components affecting total length.

For example, a protected 18650 battery can be longer because it includes a protection circuit.

This is worth remembering because button top and protected/unprotected are two different specifications.

A battery can be:

Button top + protected Button top + unprotected Flat top + protected Flat top + unprotected Not every combination is available for every cell model, but the concepts are separate.

Button Top Does Not Mean Protected This misunderstanding comes up quite often.

Some buyers see a raised positive terminal and assume the battery must have a protection circuit.

That is not correct.

The raised terminal describes the physical terminal design.

Protection refers to the electrical protection system.

A button top cell can be unprotected.

A flat top cell can also have additional protection depending on how it is constructed.

So when ordering, do not simply tell a supplier:

“I need button top batteries.”

You may also need to specify:

Protected or unprotected Capacity Discharge current Dimensions Terminal requirements Application This avoids a lot of back-and-forth later.

Which One Is Better for Battery Packs? For custom battery packs, there is no universal answer.

However, flat top cells are commonly used because the battery pack is designed around the cells and has its own electrical connection system.

Cells can be positioned closely and connected using nickel strips, busbars or other appropriate battery-pack assembly methods.

For a welded battery pack, the terminal design needs to match the intended assembly process.

This is particularly important when the battery manufacturer is producing thousands of packs.

A tiny dimensional difference that does not matter for one prototype can become a production issue when repeated across a large number of units.

What About Battery Holders? Battery holders are where the difference becomes very obvious.

Many holders use:

Springs Metal tabs Fixed contacts Sliding contacts A button top battery may be easier to install in certain holders because the raised terminal provides a clear contact point.

A flat top cell may also work if the holder is designed for it.

The safest approach is simple:

Check the battery holder specification before selecting the cell.

If you are designing the product yourself, it is even better to choose the cell and holder together.

Do not finalize the battery first and discover during assembly that the terminal does not reach the contact.

18650 battery holder compatibility Button Top vs. Flat Top for Flashlights Flashlights are a good example because many of them use replaceable cylindrical batteries.

The flashlight’s battery compartment has a fixed length.

The contacts are positioned at specific locations.

A button top 18650 may work well if the flashlight was designed around that shape.

But some flashlights require a flat top cell.

Others may accept both.

There is no reliable rule such as “all flashlights need button tops.”

The manufacturer’s compatibility specification should be checked.

For a wholesale battery buyer supplying cells for consumer devices, testing the actual battery in the target equipment is a much safer approach than relying on the product name alone.

What About High-Drain 18650 Batteries? Terminal shape does not determine whether an 18650 is high-drain.

This is another distinction worth keeping clear.

A high-drain cell is selected based on its electrical performance, including discharge capability, voltage behavior and internal characteristics.

The terminal shape is mainly a mechanical consideration.

If your application needs high current, start with the required continuous and peak current, then choose a suitable cell.

This can be especially useful if you are selecting cells for power tools, robotics or other equipment that has a large startup current.

Don’t Forget Internal Resistance The terminal shape is easy to see.

Internal resistance is not.

But for high-current applications, it can be much more important to the actual electrical performance of the battery.

Higher internal resistance can contribute to greater voltage drop and heat generation when current increases.

This is why a good cell-selection process looks at both mechanical and electrical specifications.

You need the battery to fit the product, but you also need it to perform inside the product.

Flat top 18650 cells for custom battery pack assembly Capacity Still Matters Terminal shape should not distract from the main battery requirements.

A 3000mAh button top cell and a 3500mAh flat top cell are not automatically interchangeable simply because they share the 18650 format.

The capacity affects expected runtime.

The discharge capability affects power delivery.

The physical dimensions affect compatibility.

The terminal design affects electrical contact.

All four need to be considered together.

A Simple OEM Example Imagine a company developing a portable electronic device.

The first prototype uses a standard 18650 holder.

The engineering team selects a 3500mAh cell because they want longer runtime.

The cell specifications look perfect.

But during assembly, they discover that the positive terminal does not make reliable contact.

The problem is not capacity.

It is not voltage.

It is not battery chemistry.

It is simply the terminal design and mechanical compatibility.

A few samples would have exposed the problem immediately.

This is why sample testing is particularly valuable before placing a large OEM order.

Most 18650 lithium-ion cells are described with a nominal voltage around 3.6V or 3.7V, but the cell does not stay at that voltage during use. Understanding nominal, charging and operating voltage is important when selecting cells or designing an 18650 battery pack.

When someone searches for an 18650 battery, one of the first specifications they usually see is voltage.

3.6V.

3.7V.

Sometimes 4.2V.

For someone buying batteries for the first time, it is easy to look at these numbers and wonder which one is correct.

The short answer is that they describe different points or conventions used for the same general lithium-ion cell family. A typical 18650 lithium-ion cell does not simply sit at 3.6V or 3.7V from the moment you connect a load.

Its voltage changes as it charges and discharges.

This sounds like a small detail, but it becomes important when you are designing a battery pack, selecting a BMS, choosing a charger or checking whether a battery will work with existing equipment.

What voltage is 18650 battery?​ A typical 18650 lithium-ion cell has a nominal voltage of around 3.6V or 3.7V, depending on the cell specification and how the manufacturer defines the nominal value.

Nominal voltage is basically a useful reference number.

It is not the maximum voltage.

It is not the minimum voltage.

And it is not the voltage you should expect to measure constantly during normal operation.

For many conventional lithium-ion 18650 cells, the full-charge voltage is around 4.2V.

So a cell may commonly be described like this:

Nominal voltage: 3.6V or 3.7V Full-charge voltage: around 4.2V

The exact operating range depends on the chemistry and cell model, so the manufacturer’s datasheet should always be checked for a real project.

If you are still getting familiar with 18650 cells, voltage is only one part of the specification. The physical size of the cell can also affect how a battery pack is designed, especially when the available space is tight. Why do some 18650 batteries say 3.6V and others say 3.7V?​ This is one of those questions that sounds more complicated than it really is.

Different manufacturers and datasheets may use 3.6V or 3.7V as the nominal voltage for lithium-ion cells with broadly similar voltage characteristics.

You should not assume that a cell marked 3.7V is automatically more powerful than one marked 3.6V.

It isn’t a simple performance ranking.

If you are comparing two cells for an OEM battery project, I would look at the complete specification instead:

If an 18650 cell is described as a 3.7V battery, that does not mean you should charge it to 3.7V.

For a typical lithium-ion 18650 cell, the charging voltage is higher.

A common example is:

Nominal: 3.7V Full charge: 4.2V

The cell starts at a higher voltage after charging and gradually drops as energy is used.

So if you put a multimeter on a fully charged cell, seeing something close to 4.2V is normal.

Seeing approximately 3.7V does not necessarily mean the battery is fully charged.

This distinction becomes especially important when selecting a charger.

A lithium-ion charger needs to match the cell chemistry and charging specification. Using an inappropriate charging method is not something to experiment with just because the battery label says “3.7V.”

What Happens to Voltage During Discharge?​ Imagine you have a fully charged 18650 cell.

The voltage begins around the upper end of its operating range. As the cell supplies current, its voltage gradually decreases.

The exact voltage curve depends on:

Cell chemistry Load current Temperature Cell age Internal resistance State of charge The voltage under a light load may also look different from the voltage measured while the cell is working hard.

For example, a cell may show a relatively healthy voltage when it is resting, but drop more noticeably when a high-current load is connected.

This is one reason battery engineers do not normally judge cell performance from voltage alone.

1S, 2S, 3S: What Does It Mean?​ You will often see battery specifications written as:

1S

2S

3S

4S

The “S” refers to cells connected in series.

When cells are connected in series, their voltages add together.

For example, using a nominal 3.7V reference:

1S: about 3.7V nominal

2S: about 7.4V nominal

3S: about 11.1V nominal

4S: about 14.8V nominal

And if each cell has a full-charge voltage of around 4.2V:

2S full charge: about 8.4V

3S full charge: about 12.6V

4S full charge: about 16.8V

This is why simply saying “I need a 12V 18650 battery” is not quite enough for a manufacturer.

The supplier still needs to understand the required capacity, discharge current and complete pack configuration.

18650 lithium battery cells connected in series for higher battery voltage What About Parallel Connections?​ Parallel connections work differently.

When identical cells are connected in parallel, the nominal voltage stays roughly the same while the available capacity increases.

For example, four 3000mAh cells connected in parallel would theoretically give approximately:

3.7V × 12Ah

rather than increasing the nominal voltage to 14.8V.

That would be described as 1S4P.

The first number represents the number of cells in series.

The second represents the number of cells in parallel.

So:

1S4P = 4 cells

2S4P = 8 cells

3S4P = 12 cells

The actual battery design also needs to account for BMS requirements, current, cell matching and thermal considerations. ​

12V and 24V 18650 Battery Packs​ 12V and 24V are common terms in equipment specifications, but lithium-ion packs need to be designed according to their actual nominal and maximum voltage.

A “12V lithium battery” based on 18650 cells is not literally a collection of cells that each output 12V.

Likewise, a “24V 18650 battery” is built from multiple cells.

The number of cells required depends on the target voltage and the manufacturer’s cell specification.

For example, using a typical 3.7V nominal reference:

3S ≈ 11.1V nominal

6S ≈ 22.2V nominal

But the full-charge voltage is higher.

A 3S pack with 4.2V-per-cell charging would reach approximately:

3 × 4.2V = 12.6V

That difference matters when electronics are designed around a specific input voltage range.

What Should You Tell a Battery Supplier?​ If you are requesting an 18650 battery quotation, “3.7V” is only a starting point.

For individual cells, provide:

Francis narrates his experiences to an old man in the park.

The hero Francis recounts his experiences with Dr. Caligari, a mysterious man at the fair who controls a somnambulist called Cesare and commits murders through him at night. After his friend Alan is brutally murdered, Francis is determined to investigate the crime and uncover the truth about Dr. Caligari.

The film’s director, Robert Wiene (1873–1938), was particularly prominent during the silent era of German cinema. Apart from The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, he directed Genuine (1920), Raskolnikow (1923), I.N.R.I (1923), and Hands of Orlac (1924). Wiene was born in Breslau as the elder son of the successful theater actor Carl Wiene. Following the Nazis’ rise to power, he fled Germany as he was of Jewish descent. Wiene died of cancer at the age of 65.

The art movement of which The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is a prime example is Expressionism, which distorts the image of reality to make it expressive of the artist’s inner world. Expressionist films were prevalent during the 1920s and included masterpieces such as The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Nosferatu (FW Murnau, 1922), and Sunrise (FW Murnau, 1927). In addition to expressing characters’ inner realities, the films were characterized by the play of light and shadow, stylized visuals, and silhouettes. The somber mood of expressionist films is accompanied by heavy themes of insanity, betrayal, disillusionment, and other philosophical and psychological topics.

The gruesome experiences that the German nation went through during WWI contributed to the crystallization of the expressionistic approach. Thus, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari may be said to communicate the emotions the German nation felt on both conscious and subconscious levels regarding the madness of authority and war, and incessant greed for power. The actors in the film employ a style characterized by exaggerated, overly theatrical, and unnatural movements, which help in manifesting and amplifying the intra-psychic spaces of the characters. The visual design in The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is differentiated by its dark, strange, and eerie atmosphere. Twisted and distorted streets and buildings, sharp forms and angles, the uncanny play of light and shadow reflect a nightmarish world.

Diving into themes

An overarching theme in The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is the juxtaposition between the real and the unreal. At the outset, we are led to believe that Francis’ account is reliable, given he presents himself as insightful, investigative, and sane. However, in the twist ending, the shocking realization is that Francis is an asylum inmate, rendering his account a mere hallucination about a series of events that never occurred. Additionally, Jane and Cesare turn out to be inmates of the asylum as well. The ending, therefore, raises questions about characters’ reliability and veracity.

A second theme is authority versus uprising. A malicious, insane, and exploitative authority is presented in the main story. Dr. Caligari, who uses the obedient Cesare to carry out his vicious aims, is a prime example of how power makes authority corrupt. Cesare is the passive, asleep, and manipulable spirit. Francis, however, represents an investigative mind, daring to find the hidden truth, despite the investigation being arduous. Additionally, the powerlessness of the public is seen in the visual hierarchy, with authority figures, such as clerks and police officers sitting atop high chairs and perches in opposition to the public, who are physically closer to the ground. Social hierarchy puts even Dr. Caligari in a desperate situation when, following his arrival in Holstenwall, he must obtain permission from officials to showcase his spectacle, but is berated by an arrogant clerk, underlining the bitter inequalities among people. The film scenario was written in a time when Germany was defeated during WWI and people had turned distrustful toward authority with unlimited powers. The writers of the film, Hans Janowitz and Carl Mayer, both being pacifists, thus reflect their own ideas about the irrationality of authority and its ceaseless waging of wars in a power-driven frenzy.

A third theme is duality. The overarching duality lies in the contrast between the main story and the frame story: the latter is taken to reflect reality-as-it-is, whereas the former comprises the delusions of asylum inmates. However, given the viewers were once deceived by Francis’ tale, our trust in the truth of events is broken, further rendering the truth of the frame story uncertain. Another duality is that between the natural and the non-natural. Sharp geometric shapes, spiraling streets, and eccentric-looking places reflect artifice, while bizarre facial expressions of the actors add to the unnatural atmosphere. Therefore, the nightmarish quality of the visual aspects highlights the unnaturalness of the setting in the absence of natural, everyday elements.

Shifting identities make one wonder: Can we maintain our rationality under all conditions? Is one’s character a stable entity, or is it amenable to change according to circumstances? Francis, as presented in the main story, is the heroic, rational, and brave protagonist. However, in the frame story, he is paranoid with unreasonable suspicions about the director of the asylum being the mystic Dr. Caligari. The abrupt change in Francis’ character creates doubt as to which Francis is the real one and prompts us to ponder the fragility and malleability of the idea of identity. A parallel shift is seen in the antagonist Dr. Caligari, who is at first depicted as a tyrannical megalomaniac. In the frame story, however, he turns out to be a benevolent and caring doctor. This abrupt shift in identity creates unease.

At its most basic, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is about the fixations of a doctor that ultimately consume him. The asylum director’s fixation on attaining the knowledge of the 1700s mystic Dr. Caligari causes him to disregard the well-being of his patients, including the somnambulist Cesare, whom he views only as a means to an end. As the new somnambulist is admitted to the mental hospital, Dr. Caligari’s wide-open and zealous eyes betray his madness. His greed for power is akin to that of German authorities during WWI. Dr. Caligari is not only a perpetrator, but a victim as well, since his fixated thoughts — metaphorically speaking — devour him, as can be seen in the utterance: ‘I must know everything. I must penetrate his secret. I must become Caligari.’

Examining the characters

The heroic protagonist Francis’ recounting of his tragic experiences through flashbacks emphasizes his questioning spirit daring to rise against tyrannical authority. From the beginning, Francis is a loyal and protective friend to Alan. After Alan’s gruesome death, Francis is determined to find the murderer. However, in the frame story, his protagonist status is replaced by being an asylum inmate, rendering his original account delusional.

Cesare is a twenty-three-year-old somnambulist, and the obedient puppet of Dr. Caligari, who foretells the future to the public at the fair. In the main story, he is a trained murderer, who never questions the morality of his actions, symbolizing the yielding masses complying with the actions of tyrannical authorities. However, in the frame story, he is nonviolent and peaceful, which can be seen while he is caressing the flowers in his hand.

Dr. Caligari, the director of the asylum, reflects an outlook prevalent in the German expressionistic style of the time, as seen in the black stripes on his hands and hairdo, highlighting his rigid inner world: greed, ambition for power, and fixations. He is utterly plagued by the idea of transforming into the mysterious figure of Caligari from northern Italy around the 1700s, who had successfully controlled a somnambulist and committed murders through him. Dr. Caligari is therefore not only the evil master of Cesare the somnambulist, but also a slave to his mind’s compulsions.

That makes sense. LiPo packs can deliver a lot of current, which is exactly what many multirotor drones need during takeoff, climbing and fast movement.

But not every UAV needs that kind of power all the time.

For mapping, inspection, surveying and other long-duration applications, the conversation is often different. The aircraft may spend a long period flying at a relatively steady power level, and carrying extra battery weight can become a problem.

This is where a 21700 drone battery becomes interesting.

The 21700 cell is larger than the familiar 18650 format and can offer higher capacity at the individual-cell level. With the right cell and pack design, it can be a practical option for a long endurance UAV battery.

It is not a magic upgrade for every drone, though. The aircraft’s power requirements still come first.

Understandable. I wished her good luck in her career and moved on, thinking that was going to be the last that I ever heard from her. About six months later I received a series of frantic facebook messages from her. Apparently, she had ‘fallen in love’ with her (married) team leader, slept with him a bunch of times, and he had gotten her pregnant.

The story opens toward the end of the episode “That Which Survives”. Kirk, McCoy and Sulu are trapped on the Kalandan station surrounded by the 3 Losira replicants. Spock and a security guard beam down just in time to shoot the Kalandan defense computer and saves them. Kirk hails the ship for beamout, they have a little chat about beauty surviving.

The end.

After the credits, Enterprise tries to beam up the landing party, but the transporter is interrupted by the biofilter detecting the disease that killed off the Kalandans. The entire landing party is infected, and can't leave until they can find a cure. While they're working on a cure, they continue to explore the station, discovering the Kalandan living quarters, one of the control rooms, some other interesting things. They're able to get some computer access, but since the station is in lockdown, all the vital information is controlled by the defense computer, which the security officer, whose name is Reinhart, by the way, left in a smoldering mess.

Kirk reaches out to command, explains what they've found, and is ordered not to allow the station to fall into enemy hands.

The activation of the Kalandan station yeeting Enterprise 900 lightyears away and Losira's repeated usage of the portal generates a massive power spike, which gets the attention of a Klingon ship, as well as a Petraw scout ship. The Petraw are a kindof eusocial humanoid species. Their scout ships are crewed by a half dozen or so individuals, who scour the galaxy to obtain interesting technology, which they then send back to their homeworld. To get their hands on alien technology, they often pursue elaborate con jobs. They gather as much information as they can, tapping into Enterprise's comms with Starfleet Command, and decide to pose as the descendants of the Kalandans to stake claim to the station.

The Klingons arrive first, itching for a fight. Enterprise fights back, but their warp engines are still offline following Losira's sabotage, so they're on the ropes. Then the Petraw claiming to be Kalandans arrive, blow the Klingons to scrap, and introduce themselves. And as icing on the cake, they just happen to have a vaccine treatment that will prevent the sporocite infection from becoming a virus, allowing the away team to safely beam back to the ship.

Kirk is naturally suspicious, but has no proof. So he has no choice but to play along diplomatically until he can gather more information. More Klingons will be on their way, but it will take them a few days to get there. He can't let the station fall into Klingon hands, but he can't be sure the Kalandans are who they say they are, so he's unsure if he can allow them to take it either. He agrees to team up with the Kalandans to explore the station and gather more information. The Petraw commander, Tasm, observed Kirk's attraction to Losira, so she tailored her appearance thinking she could use her feminine wiles to manipulate Kirk. But Kirk finds her advances off-putting.

Their medical officer, Luz, also assumes the form of a beautiful woman, targeting McCoy.

They discover the gateway system that the Losira replicant used to pop in and out of existence. The system that let her instantly appear at any part on the surface of the planet, and even travel to and from Enterprise while it was on its way back from where it was punted. The Petraw want this technology above anything else that might be available on the station. But Kirk recognizes that it can be dangerous in the wrong hands. But anyway, it's locked out by the defense computer, so they've got to get it back into working order before it'll be of any use to anyone.

It's an interesting game of cat and mouse. The reader knows the Petraw aren't really Kalandans. Kirk is suspicious, but not certain. McCoy seems reticent to look a gift horse in the mouth. Especially when one of those gift horses talks the talk of a brilliant medical officer, and is also kinda hot. McCoy more than most of the crew seems to play the mark. Scotty and Spock are seldom in a position to question the Kalandan's authenticity, and the rest of the crew… well…

One thing I've noticed with a few novels lately is the narrative's tendency to forget that the rest of the crew exist unless they're needed. Uhura and Chekov in particular are on the bridge, do their jobs when called on, but the narrative doesn't bring any attention to them unless they're needed to perform some action to move a particular scene forward. And one gets the impression that if Sulu weren't on the planet at the end of the episode, the novel would have forgotten about him too, except for a few instances where he needs to take command. The novel tries to give some of the background characters something to do, M'Benga, Rahda, Reinhart, and even some original characters we've never seen before. But falls into the common habit of forgetting members of the principle cast.

It's by remarkable coincidence that the recently released Strange New Worlds episode “Off-Hour” reintroduced the character of Lt. Rahda just as I'd finished “That Which Survives” and “One Small Step”. I don't think I've seen anyone else mention this, but both episodes make reference to jettisoning a component; “Off-Hour” shows that Pike had to jettison the ion pod before it exploded. In “That Which Survives”, Enterprise is accelerating out of control, and Scotty is in a crawlway trying to access the flow valve to stop it. Spock orders Rahda to arm the jettison system in case something goes wrong. The crawlway isn't the ion pod, but it gets called a pod in dialog. Most commentary I've seen compares the recent episode to “Court Martial”. I'm not aware of any who have drawn the connection to “That Which Survives,” but it's an interesting mirroring of the situation in “Off-Hour”.

That's just an observation. It's got nothing to do with the novel.

The novel ends with Kirk jumping through the portal in pursuit of Tasm and Luz who absconded with the portal control device.

This is sort of the conceit of the Gateways series. Novels 1 through 6 follow each series' crew as they discover the gateway tech, culminating in one of our heroes jumping through the gateway. The last few chapters are hacked off and presented as short stories, collected in book 7. Whichever hero jumped through the portal needs to complete their mission and find their way back. In Kirk's case, the short story “One Giant Leap,” follows him exclusively as he is on the Petraw birth world, some 40000 lightyears from Earth. He needs to track down the portal control device and destroy it before the Petraw can make use of it, and then find his way home. Kirk explores the Petraw homeworld, learning about their culture and their way of life. To imagine a sapient, humanoid species with a eusocial culture is an interesting exercise, and I think it's mostly pulled off well. There might have been a missed opportunity to make the Petraw more insectoid than humanoid to fit with the whole beehive motif, but that's an aesthetic quibble.

There's no mention of the Iconians. The gateway seems at this point to be Kalandan tech. Though it is mentioned that Losira's people were a breakaway group from a more oppressive regime. That might suggest Iconian influence, though the Kalandans were about 12000 years too late for direct contact. The Kalandans may have found and adapted Iconan tech, or developed the gateways independently. I guess I'll find out when I get to the rest of the series.
